JACK FOSTER'S PORTFOLIO
The Truss
When building this truss we were tasked with having it be no more than 23'' long and 7' tall and it had to be able to support 1200 lb.
To try and accomplish this we went with a Warren typed design, as it is great for supporting vertical loads. We designed the truss so our minimum safety factor was 2.1 and it was predicted to hold about 2600 lb.
In the end these numbers were only calculated for an ideal situation and due to manufacturing errors, our truss did not sit properly on the force machine and broke due to shear force on the balsa wood gusset plate at 1083 lb.
